My name is Matthew Lieberman and I am a Freshman and Emory University. I am planning on majoring in the business school, and am open to new experiences and studies. Cars have been influential on my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, all of my presents were car related and I even had a car themed bar mitzvah. I am not sure what initially got me into it, but cars have always been intertwined in my life. Cars are my passion, and I have never been afraid to admit it. While those involved in car culture tend to be associated with street racing and therefore have a negative stigma attached to them, I have embraced my passion and have always defending car culture against those who try to pervert its purity. I even wrote my main college application essay about how cars have influenced me and allowed me to grow with a metaphor about changing the gears of life.

Enthusiasts like me, see cars as empty canvasses. Modifications and aftermarket parts allows cars to be morphed into their owners’ visions. When people get very involved in car culture, they often spend more money on altering their cars than on what they originally paid for the car itself. When done right, I hold the view that cars are very representative of their owners. The personality of a driver is often transmitted to the car they love and cherish. In this way, I see cars as more than just vehicles used to move, but rather as art with function; a beautiful concoction. While, I have never had the economic means to get the car that works best for me and mend it to my exact specifications, I had a car I loved, and was able to help friends make their vehicular dreams come true. Car culture is a family who look after each other, regardless of their taste of cars or driving style. I drive because I love it, and while I do not have a car at Emory, whether it is from my application essay or another aspect, I still feel as if my relationship with cars have drafted me here, and I will never forget it.
