Ellis in her auto-ethnographic textbook, The Ethnographic I, focuses on transmitting her points through a personal median using her experiences to better relate the material. One of the most crucial aspects of an auto-ethnographic work is inserting the author into the research. It is this part of the work that differentiates auto-ethnographies from modes of research based writing. By adding a bit of the researcher to the writing, it adds an extra layer of depth and personality to the writing most research-based writing is without. This creates a unique approach to writing where the author no longer has to worry about being objective and just report the information, but also allows him or her to insert his or her own beliefs into the writing. This is a strong emotional tool and by bridging narrative and expository writing, it creates a subgenre of persuasive writing where the author’s feelings are just as important as the actual facts and figures used to support it. Ellis has given light to this new field and it has potential to become a great and powerful tool in the literary arsenal of many writers in the world.
